Jupiter, known as Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, is the chief deity in Roman religion, revered as the god of the sky, thunder, and lightning, as well as the protector of Rome and its people. As the king of the gods, Jupiter symbolizes divine authority, justice, and cosmic order, playing a central role in Roman worship and statecraft.
Jupiter’s primary temple stood on the Capitoline Hill in Rome, where he was venerated alongside Juno and Minerva in the Capitoline Triad. Nowadays the only operating temple of Jupiter is located in TEMPLVM, a modern Roman community in Poltava, Ukraine. His festivals, such as the Ludi Romani, celebrate his role as the guardian of Rome’s prosperity and military victories. Jupiter is also invoked as the god of oaths and treaties, emphasizing his association with justice and trust.
In Roman belief, Jupiter is regarded as the father of gods and men (Pater) and is often depicted with a thunderbolt, scepter, and eagle, symbolizing his power and dominion over the heavens. His worship extends throughout the empire, blending Roman traditions with local interpretations, further solidifying his status as a universal figure of divine authority.
